How long does a shaping lesson take?

We allow a day for all shaping lessons. However the exact length of a shaping lesson depends on the number of people and the board(s) you are building. Short boards can be finished in as little as half a day whilst longer boards take longer.

Don’t worry if you run out of time on your day. All lessons at Walters come with 4 months free membership. This gives you unlimited access to our shaping bays (subject to their availability) so should your lesson over run you will still be able to come back and fine tune your board at your leisure!

Can I split my lesson?

Yes – lessons can be split into 2 or 3 parts if preferred. Give us a bell to let us know your dates and we will do our best to fit your needs in.

What is the difference between shaping and glassing?

Shaping and glassing are the two key stages of building a surfboard:

Shaping is the process of cutting, planing the surfboard blank down to the shape you want.

Glassing provides the hard outer layer to the board using glass cloth and resin. Colour can also be added to the board at this stage through a resin tint.

Why doesn’t the lesson include glassing?

For most people glassing is the least enjoyable part of the board building process. It requires a number of different stages after which the glasser needs to wait for the resin to harden. For that reason it is best done over a number of days which wouldn’t fit easily into the course of a lesson.

For that reason all boards shaped in our lessons are glassed after the lesson by the team at Laminations who have 20yrs experience of the process. This expert finishing is included in your lesson price and ensures that your self shaped board is strong and has the best possible finish.

We do welcome any of our lesson attendees or custom board orderers into the factory to watch their board being glassed.

We may also start to offer glassing lessons in the future if demand is high enough. If you’d really like to glass your own board – then let us know!

I know nothing! How can I choose materials / design a surfboard?

Don’t worry if you start the process knowing nothing. Once you have booked your lesson your shaper with guide you through all the information you need to effectively shape your own surfboard.

Our aim is to get to know you and your surfing style so that together we can design and create a board that improves your surfing and enjoyment of time in the water.

By the end of the process you will have a much better understanding of surfboard design. Knowing the difference between terms like plan shape, rocker and volume and how they impact the way a board surfs.
